Landforms

  1. On the big sheet of grid paper draw an outline of a large island.
  2. Using the colored pencils, draw the seven landforms from this list on your island. You must include all seven.
  • Mountain
  • River
  • Waterfall
  • Plateau
  • Delta
  • Lake
  • Tributary

You may add other landforms, landmarks, and animals as long as long as you include all seven landforms from the list provided. As you draw you should think about:
  • Where the landforms should be located on your island.
  • The location and size of the landforms in relation to each other.
  • Using your colored pencils to draw the landforms as accurately as possible.

Map Navigation

On your large island map, select three locations where you could hide secret treasures. Do not draw the treasures on your large map. Just select the three locations.

Use the following guidelines for each of your clues:

Clue One: On the blank sheet of paper provided, write a clue or set of clues using at least one grid coordinate that could help a classmate find your first hidden treasure.

Clue Two: Using a landmark or landform as a starting point, write a clue or set of clues using compass directions and the map scale to help a classmate locate your second hidden treasure.

Clue Three: Using a landmark or landform as a starting point, write a clue or set of clues using compass directions, the map scale, and the map grid to help a classmate locate your third hidden treasure.

Modeling

  • Using the small grid paper provided draw a small model of your island.
    • First, draw the outline of your island as accurately as you can on the small sheet of paper.
    • Second, create a symbol for each of your landforms, treasures, and any landmarks (like a bridge, road, etc.) that you want to identify on your small island model. Draw these symbols and label them in the Map Key box.
    • Using your big island map as a guide, draw all of your map key symbols on the small model map as accurately as possible.
    • Try to make your small island model look like your big island – just on a smaller scale using symbols instead of drawings.
    • Make sure your hidden treasures are represented on your small map.

Treasure Hunt:

  • Exchange big island maps and clue sheets with a classmate. Keep your small island model sheet hidden.
  • See if your classmate can locate each of your three treasures from the clues you have written.
Once your classmate thinks that he/she has located all three treasures, give him/her your small island model sheet so that they can
check their locations.
